Also known as liver spots, age spots are dark areas on your skin that tend to appear in places that are often exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, shoulders and arms.
People of all skin types and colors are at risk for age spots. However, they are most common in individuals with very light complexions. A true age spot is:
- A flat, oval area
- Tan, brown or black
- On areas of the skin that are regularly exposed to the sun
If your spot becomes darker, grows larger, has an irregular border or is accompanied by itchiness, redness, tenderness and bleeding, it’s a good idea to have it evaluated by a doctor to make sure it isn’t something more serious.
What causes age spots?
Age spots develop due to overactive pigment cells. When your skin is exposed to UV light, the production of melanin (pigment) accelerates. This causes the dark spots to appear.
Age spots don’t usually cause problems or complications, but many people consider them to be unsightly and a premature sign of the aging process that they don’t want to accept. When this occurs, there are fortunately a number of highly effective ways to minimize their appearance.
The first is with IPL photofacial, which works by targeting and destroying the melanin-producing cells. This causes the age spots to fade over time. We may also recommend microdermabrasion treatments or chemical peels, which essentially remove the damaged, surface layer of your skin where the excess pigment exists to reduce their prominence. We offer all three of these treatment approaches at Jon’Ric Austin.
